Under an agreement between the two leader of the Beatles, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, all the original songs of the group were officially registered as compositions of both (with Lennon, founder of the group, in the first place), but of course in reality many songs were composed by one or other of the two musicians. Only a relatively small number of songs were actually written together. In many cases, the real authorship is known since the main (Yesterday and Let It Be by Paul, Lucy In The Sky with Diamonds and Norwegian Wood by John), but in other cases the authorship of the compositions was discovered only after the patient work of fans. In particular, thanks to the work of the Swedish fan Myrsten, it is available for a long time a complete list of all the compositions of the quartet, with the indication of the author and lead vocal, available in different websites, including the site of Myrsten Penny Lane . The list contains some assumptions on which the opinions are not unanimous. Music-Graffiti, thanks to the the support of correspondents and fans who write to us can integrate the available information including here a more detailed and updated summary. |

|
The uncertainty depends mainly on the different assessment of the work in the recording studio, during which the pieces chosen from one or other of the musicians were subjected to the others members, that maybe helped with additions and variations. So Paul has developed the famous chorus of "Lucy In The Sky" and John has developed the central part of "Michelle", both of these famous pieces can then be attributed to the couple rather than the individual. |

Statystics and Comments |
Considering the total number of songs released by the Beatles (183), according to that study, about 40% are composed by John, and a little less by Paul, the division is shown in the following table (where Harrison and Starr are listed only with the songs entirely composed by them). |

Furthermore, it is important to assess the importance of the individual songs, the success they've had, the influence they have exerted, and here you can see the particularly important role played by Paul, both at the beginning, and in the final phase, and at the same time confirming the role fundamental of John, without whose songs the Beatles would have been a very different thing. At the beginning of Paul are the first two hits, Love Me Do and P.S. I Love You, and was written by both the hit single She Loves You, and John was the author of the first great success of the four: Please Please Me. During the "Beatlemania" are masterpieces of Paul Can't Buy Me Love and And I Love Her, by John another historical song as A Hard Day's Night. A period characterized by songs that followed a pattern very precise, easily stackable and interchangeable. In the middle of the group's history, the creativity of John becomes predominant, which produces masterpieces (and successes) fundamentals, such as Nowhere Man, Norwegian Wood, Help!, You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, Day Tripper, Rain, Ticket To Ride and also, surprisingly, the super-romantic Girl, while Paul helps with a global success as Michelle (but with an important contribution of John), with Paperback Writer, and especially with the absolute masterpiece (according to many, the perfect song of the century): Yesterday. From album Revolver in 1966 began a turn, experimental and psychedelic, which sees John as a leader, author of Tomorrow Never Knows and Happiness Is A Warm Gun. During this time, the compositions of the two musicians differ more then before, with Lennon interested in rock and psychedelic songs, and Paul in definitely pop ones (Eleanor Rigby) or sentimental (Here There And Everywhere, She's Leaving Home, When I'm Sixty-Four). A phase in which also begins the work of composer George, with the beautiful song While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and later, with the worldwide smash Something and then with the dreamy Here Comes The Sun. A situation that is already completely changes in the celebrated album masterpiece of the Beatles: the lead song (Sgt. Pepper is due to Paul, as well as most of the best-known songs, and then in the double LP "White Album" where the turn toward rock is led by Paul, with songs that will be the prototype of the future hard-rock and afterwards of the metal, such as Back In The URSS, Birthday , and above all, Helter Skelter. It's the beginning of a new phase extremely creative of Paul, that explores all genres, from the ska in Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da up to the opposing styles of Golden Slumbers / Carry That Weight, and including the musical with Yellow Submarine. |
|
The final phase |
The final stage sees
Paul as the author of almost all the major successes of the group, and John
writing few pieces, often understand and appreciated only in retrospect. Paul is
in fact the author of Get
Back, Let It Be, Hey Jude,
The Long And Winding Road, Lady
Madonna. John wrote Julia, Sexy
Sadie, Across The Universe and among the
most successful single, only Come Together e
The Ballad Of John and Yoko
(which of course was written by him). Creativity at different speeds that may have contributed to unbalance the group on the side of Paul. Probably the main reason, along with other elements (the pressure of other musical trends - just think of Hendrix, Pink Floyd, the West Coast and, of course, the Rolling Stones triumphant rivals among young people - the presence of Mrs. Ono, politics and protest) of the premature dissolution of the group. Unfortunately it was not possible to repeat this the magic balance, that permitted to create songs like A Day In The Life, a masterpiece of the group, or the mixture of friendship and rivalry that inspired, especially to Paul, a unique creative phase, even for him. John, freed from the Beatles, retrieved instead a new era of creativity, while controversial and dominated for good or evil by the figure of Yoko Ono. A new beginning that allowed him to give to the world beautiful songs like Jealous Guy, Mind Games, Woman, Give Peace A Chance, Woman Is The Nigger Of The World, and especially his masterpiece, voted by almost everyone as the song of the century, obviously, we are talking about Imagine. |

Notes |
(1) |
Michelle |
Usually considered a composition by Paul, but John contributed with the central section of the song. |
|
(2) |
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds |
The main tune is attributed to John, but the famous chorus was written together with Paul. |
|
(3) |
Yes It Is |
The song is sung in chorus almost entirely by John, Paul and George, the only short parts with a lead vocal are sung by John. The same goes for This Boy, a song very similar in the structure. |
|
(4) |
You Know My Name |
The mumbled interlude is of uncertain attribution. |
|
(5) |
John Lennon |
The tunes for Jealous Guy and Imagine were composed by Lennon when the Beatles were still together, during his stay in India in 1968, ie before the White Album. The prototype of Jealous Guy was titled Child Of Nature, and was discarded by the White Album because the similitude of the theme with Mother Nature's Son, written by Paul. |
|
(6) |
Every Little Thing Unclear |
Composed by Lennon (in the original list it is attributed to both), although Lennon said, recalling bad, that the author was just Paul McCartney. |
|
(7) |
Eleanor Rigby |
A contribution by Lennon to the lyrics. |
|
(8) |
With A Little Help From My Friends |
Composed at the piano on the same night in which The Fool On The Hill was created, during a party with friends. Then headed for Ringo singing. |
|
(9) |
She's leaving home |
Lennon wrote the lyrics of the chorus (when the girl's parents tell that she's leaving), and sings this part. |
|
(10) |
Eight Days a Week |
Lennon contributed to the elaboration of the song and the vocals are sung by him instead than in a duo with Paul (as listed by Myrsten) |
|
(11) |
Tomorrow Never Knows |
Most of the effects (tape loops) were created by McCartney (eg the gulls that are based on a elaboration if his laughter). |
