The most important and the most popular alternative rock band from the 80s to the 2000s started as post-punk group, reminiscing the best folk and country rock, and in particular the guitar style of the Byrds, and adding lyrics full of literary references and suggestions written by the group's leader Michael Stipe. The first six albums were produced with independent labels, and with their sixth album arrived the great success with the public, after the success between the music critics.
