(Ghost) Riders in the Sky (A Cowboy Legend)

HOME

An old cowpoke went riding out one dark and windy day,
Upon a ridge he rested as he went along his way,

When all at once a mighty herd of red eyed cows he saw,

A-plowin' through the ragged skies and up a cloudy draw.
Yippee-yi-ya, yippee-yi-yo, ghost herd in the sky.

Their brands were still on fire and their hooves were
made of steel,
Their horns were black and shiny and their hot breath he could feel,

A bolt of fear shot through him as he looked up in the sky,
for he saw the riders comin' hard and he heard their mournful cry.

Yippee-yi-ya, yippee-yi-yo, ghost riders in the sky.

Their faces were gaunt, their eyes were blurred, their shirts all
soaked with sweat,
They're riding hard to catch that herd, but they ain't caught 'em yet,

For they've got to ride forever on that range up in the sky,

for they've got to catch the devil's herd, as they ride on hear them cry.

Yippee-yi-ya, yippee-yi-yo, ghost riders in the sky.

The cowpokes rode on past him and he heard one call his name,

If you want to save your soul from hell a-riding on a range,

Then cowboy change your ways today, or with us you will ride,

A-trying to catch the devil's herd across these endless skies.
Yippee-yi-ya, yippee-yi-yo, ghost riders in the sky.

Yippee-yi-ya, yippee-yi-yo, ghost riders in the sky.

Notes

A cowboy style tune written by Stan Jones in 1948 and recorded the first time by Burl Ives in 1949, and then covered by many musicians, including Bing Crosby, The Shadows (instrumental only) and Johnny Cash, and finally the Blues Brothers Band on the sequel Blues Brother 2000 of John Landis.
In the different interpretation lyrics were occasionally changes, so we add also an alternative version below.

Alternative lyrics

An old cow polk went ridin’ one dark and windy day
Upon a ranch he rested as he went along his way
When all at once a mighty herd of red eyed cows he saw
A plowin’ through the ragged sky and up the cloudy draw

Yippee-I-Yay
Yippee-I-Yo
Ghost Riders in the Sky

Their brands were still on fire and thier hoofs were made of steel
Their horns were black and shiney and thier hot breath he could feel
A bolt of fear went through him as they thundered through the sky

Yippee-I-Yay
Yippee-I-Yo
Ghost Riders in the Sky

Their faces gone, their eyes were blurred , their shirts all soaked with sweat
Their rindin’ hard to catch that heard but they ain’t caught ‘em yet
‘Cause they got to ride forever in that range up in the sky
On horses snortin’ fire... as they ride they hear their cry

Yippee-I-Yay
Yippee-I-Yo
Ghost Riders in the Sky

As the riders loped on by him, he heard one call his name
'If you want to save your soul from hell, you’re ridin’ on that range
then cowboy, change your ways today……or with us you’ll ride on
tryin’ to catch the devil’s herd across the endless sky'
Yippee-I-Yay (Yippee-I-Yay)
Yippee-I-Yo (Yippee-I-Yo)
